Mr. Cornel Radu of VOA in Chicago sent me the following email. With his permission to post, I'd like to share it with the CADVANCE users. ================================================= Mr. Furukawa, Re. 3D modeling: CAVANCE (inclusive LiTe version) ‘goes’ very well w/ SketchUp v.5 (SU): CAVANCE as 2D and SU as 3D…(in 3D, to build and to visualize, SU is much more powerful and intuitive than CV) You (F I T, Inc.) don’t need some special Accessories or Utilities to import CAVANCE dwgs. into SU – practically you require an ‘effective’ TUTORIAL… SU imports successfully DWG or DXF files. CAVANCE has several immense advantages like: - To draw and ‘fix’ a ‘sophisticated’ (especially architectural…) 2D is much faster than AutoCAD (and other ‘full loaded’ CAD programs…); - To export as DWG/DXF, there are two ways: 1. File > Save As > Drawings (*.dwg or *.dxf) or 2. Utility > Translate > DWG… or DXF… w/ more Options, plus Conversion Modes: 2D only, Both 2D and 3D, 3D Only. (Usually, your dwg/dxf files are more ‘cleaner’ and smaller than AutoCAD’s); - 3D Extrusion setup (in ‘Layer Properties’) besides Utility > Extrude… > ‘by layer’ or ‘by elevation’ - they are inestimable features…; - Using the ‘powerful’ Selection ‘filter’ (Properties…> Object Selection dialog-box ) it’s very ‘easy’ to eliminate all ‘extra’ entities, before exporting for 3D…( to ‘prepare’ the dwgs…); - It’s ‘easy’ also to Edit, Replace, Expand (explode) of Symbols/Groups before exporting… - Etc. All the best for you! Cornel Radu ================================================= If you work on 3D with CADVANCE and other software packages, please let's share your knowlege and experiences with other users. Yet, I still believe that CADVANCE 3D is the best "quick view" 3D just to see what it's like in 3D. T. F |

Sketchup is definitely a better 3D environment, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. Cadvance can be enhanced and improved by using macros and DLL plug-ins to update its interface. I've created a set of plug-ins that try to address some of the Cadvance 3D issues, information found at: http://visual-engineering.com/3DTools.html and http://visual-engineering.com/cviOpenGLViewer.html Building a 3D model in Cadvance for translation into Sketchup requires a different mind set than doing a 2D drawing. More layers are needed to manage and separate objects. The standard layering scheme for a drawing will not work. Creating models from 2D by extruding the plan is simple in Cadvance. Extremely large models are more easily created and positioned in Cadvance before exporting to Sketchup. Sketchup needs a lot of memory and models tend to be very large requiring lots of disk space. Cadvance models do translate very well into Sketchup, but they will be changed and altered to suit Sketchup's way of operating. Objects on the same layer are optimized, grouped and cleaned up. Sketchup has a tendency to make adjoining parts stick together. Grouping parts or creating symbols in Cadvance will allow the components to stay together in Sketchup. Sketchup does have some nice editing tools for manipulation of vertices. It also lets editing occur in a rendered mode making it real easy see objects as they are. The free Google Skecthup is available for download at: http://sketchup.google.com/ The free version will allow imports of models and saving to Sketchup files. No additional exporting functions are allowed. Animated walk thrus and bitmap saves are only possible in the Pro version which costs $495. Most plug-in Ruby scripts will run in the free version enhancing productivity and can be found by doing a Google search. |
