Ken,

Thanks for the input. It sounds like it's not worth dealing with. 90 percent of our symbol placing is done via macros. I don't feel like editing all of those macros. I've probably got about 800 symbol related macros.

The biggest issue is zooming. It won't zoom in extemely close but close enough for what we do. We use a different world size for detail drawings. Again, not my choice.

Cheers!
Jeff

Jeff,

Wow...a world size of almost 4000 miles! I wonder what caused him to set it up that way.

I think the Cadvance out of the box standard has been 1/1024 smallest unit at 1/8"=1'-0". That is what we followed until we purchased AETools. AETools uses 1/8000 smallest unit at 1/8"=1'-0".

We made the change some time ago, but as I recall, the biggest issue was symbols. It depends upon how you use them. For example, to use AETools, a symbol needs to be sized so that it uses a scale of 1 when placed in a drawing that is at 1/8"=1'-0" (1/8000 smallest unit). Depending upon how you place your symbols, you might not need to change them, just change the scale you place them at. In our case, we recreated all of our symbols so we could use the AETools symbol setup. We also wrote a macro that could be run on older drawings to update them to the new standard.

So it is possible to make the change. It wasn't a nightmare for us by any means, but it did take some careful planning. My suggestion...first evaluate the need. Is your current config causing problems? Enough problems to force a change? If so, do some testing to make sure you understand the affects of changing your configuration and then make sure the change works correctly before implementing it. If it isn't causing you problems, then maybe you just need to leave it alone. No reason to create unnecessary work for yourself.

Regards,
Ken

Thanks to the predecessors of my predecessor, when I took over as CAD Manager (by default and not because I am a skilled computer guy), our office standard world size was 20833333’-4” with a smallest unit of 1/8 and drawing scale of 16’-0”. I don’t exactly what all that means but I know enough to know that a smallest unit of 1/8 is ridiculous and it never should have been set up that way. A smallest unit of 1024 would have been much better. However, I haven’t had the nerve to take on trying to change the office standard world size. From what I understand (and that’s not much) it would include all new libraries and there would be a lot of issues with older drawings. The nature of our work requires us to be in and out of older drawings over and over. Our Tenant Design group is the planner of record for hundreds of buildings and continually maintains and updates more than 20,000 CAD files. I don’t see how I could ever change our office standard world size.

Am I making more of this than it really is or would is just be a huge nightmare to change the standard world size?

Thanks for any advice.
